Can You Use Compost for Houseplants? A Plant-by-Plant Guide

If you've started composting at home, you may be wondering whether your indoor plants can benefit too. The answer is yes, but not every houseplant wants the same type or amount of compost.

Unlike vegetables grown outdoors, houseplants live in containers with limited soil, drainage, and airflow. Too much compost can hold excess moisture, reduce aeration, and even lead to root rot. Used correctly, however, finished compost can improve soil health, provide slow-release nutrients, and reduce your reliance on synthetic fertilizers. The key is matching the compost to the plant.


What Is Compost?

Compost is decomposed organic matter made from materials like food scraps, leaves, coffee grounds, and yard trimmings. When fully finished, compost becomes a dark, earthy material filled with beneficial microorganisms and organic matter. For houseplants, compost should be viewed as a soil amendment, not a replacement for potting mix.


Which Type of Compost Is Best?

Not all compost belongs in houseplant containers.


Best Choices

  • Screened finished compost

  • Vermicompost (worm castings)

  • High-quality commercial compost


These products are clean, fully decomposed, and easy to mix into potting soil.


Avoid

  • Fresh compost

  • Unfinished compost

  • Compost containing large wood chips

  • Compost with food scraps still visible


These can smell, attract fungus gnats, and damage plant roots.

Houseplants That Love Compost

Tropical Foliage Plants

These plants naturally grow in forests where leaves continually decompose into the soil.


Most appreciate modest compost additions. These plants respond well to top dressing with compost every three to six months or by mixing 10–20% compost into fresh potting soil during repotting. Examples include:

  • Monstera

  • Philodendron

  • Pothos

  • Peace Lily

  • Syngonium

  • Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

  • Dieffenbachia


Ferns

Many ferns naturally grow in rich woodland soils. Ferns generally appreciate soils with more organic matter but still require excellent drainage. Examples include:

  • Boston Fern

  • Bird's Nest Fern

  • Maidenhair Fern


Indoor Herbs

Kitchen herbs often benefit from compost because they're harvested frequently and use nutrients quickly. Compost helps replenish nutrients without overwhelming the plants. Examples include:

  • Basil

  • Parsley

  • Chives

  • Cilantro

  • Mint

Houseplants That Need Less Compost

Some indoor plants evolved in rocky or arid environments where soils contain relatively little organic matter. Too much compost can actually cause problems.


Snake Plants

Snake plants prefer fast-draining soil. If using compost, keep it below about 10% of the soil mix.


ZZ Plants

ZZ plants tolerate poor soils remarkably well. Use compost sparingly.


Succulents

Succulents generally need excellent drainage. Heavy compost additions increase moisture retention and can encourage root rot.


Cacti

Most cacti evolved in lean, sandy, or rocky soils. Use very little compost, if any. Focus instead on fast-draining cactus mixes.


Orchids Are Different

Most orchids shouldn't be planted in compost at all. Many popular orchids naturally grow attached to trees rather than in soil. Instead, they prefer chunky bark, sphagnum moss, or specialty orchid mixes that provide excellent airflow around their roots.

How Much Compost Should You Use?

More compost doesn't necessarily produce healthier plants. Less is almost always better. For fresh potting mixes:

  • 10–20% compost

  • 80–90% quality potting mix


For established plants, top dress with about ½ inch of finished compost or worm castings every three to six months.


Worm Castings vs. Compost

If you're new to houseplants, worm castings are often the easiest choice. Why gardeners love worm castings:

  • Very low odor

  • Easy to apply

  • Easy to make indoors

  • Rich in beneficial microbes

  • Gentle nutrient levels

  • Lower risk of overwatering problems


Common Problems

Fungus Gnats

Usually caused by:

  • Soil staying too wet

  • Unfinished compost

  • Excess organic matter on the surface


Root Rot

Usually caused by:

  • Too much compost

  • Poor drainage

  • Overwatering


Sour-Smelling Soil

Healthy compost smells earthy. Bad odors usually indicate unfinished compost or waterlogged soil.


Mold on the Surface

Surface mold is usually harmless and caused by high humidity and excess moisture. Improving airflow and reducing watering often solves the problem.


Compost Isn't a Replacement for Potting Mix

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is filling an entire pot with compost. Houseplants need:

  • Air around their roots

  • Consistent drainage

  • Lightweight growing media


A quality potting mix provides those conditions. Compost improves that mix, but it doesn't replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put kitchen scraps directly into my houseplant?

No. Fresh food scraps attract pests, create odors, and decompose too slowly for container plants. Always compost them first.


Is compost enough fertilizer?

Sometimes. Slow-growing plants may receive all the nutrients they need from compost, while fast-growing tropical plants or flowering species may still benefit from supplemental fertilizer.


How often should I add compost?

Most indoor plants only need compost every three to six months.


Can compost attract bugs?

Finished compost is much less likely to attract pests than unfinished compost. Proper watering is equally important.


Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plant

Healthy houseplants begin with healthy soil. While fertilizer gives plants a quick nutrient boost, compost improves the growing environment itself by supporting beneficial microbes, improving soil structure, and slowly releasing nutrients over time.

The best approach depends on the type of plant you're growing. Tropical foliage plants often appreciate compost-rich potting mixes, while cacti, succulents, snake plants, and other drought-adapted species generally perform better with far less organic matter. Understanding where your houseplants naturally grow, and recreating those conditions as closely as possible is one of the best ways to help them thrive indoors.
