Houseplants That Love Compost
Tropical Foliage Plants
These plants naturally grow in forests where leaves continually decompose into the soil.
Most appreciate modest compost additions. These plants respond well to top dressing with compost every three to six months or by mixing 10–20% compost into fresh potting soil during repotting. Examples include:

ZZ Plants
ZZ plants tolerate poor soils remarkably well. Use compost sparingly.
Succulents
Succulents generally need excellent drainage. Heavy compost additions increase moisture retention and can encourage root rot.
Cacti
Most cacti evolved in lean, sandy, or rocky soils. Use very little compost, if any. Focus instead on fast-draining cactus mixes.
Orchids Are Different
Most orchids shouldn't be planted in compost at all. Many popular orchids naturally grow attached to trees rather than in soil. Instead, they prefer chunky bark, sphagnum moss, or specialty orchid mixes that provide excellent airflow around their roots.

How Much Compost Should You Use?
More compost doesn't necessarily produce healthier plants. Less is almost always better. For fresh potting mixes:

80–90% quality potting mix
For established plants, top dress with about ½ inch of finished compost or worm castings every three to six months.
Worm Castings vs. Compost
If you're new to houseplants, worm castings are often the easiest choice. Why gardeners love worm castings:

Gentle nutrient levels
Lower risk of overwatering problems
