100th Day of School Composting Activities: Hands-On STEM Ideas Students Will Never Forget

The 100th day of school is a milestone worth celebrating. Across classrooms, students count to 100, build collections of 100 objects, complete math challenges, and reflect on everything they've learned so far! But what if the number 100 could also teach environmental science, biology, ecology, and sustainability?

Composting transforms the traditional 100th day celebration into a hands-on STEM experience where students see exactly how small daily actions create big environmental impact. Instead of counting paper clips or cotton balls, students count real compostable materials and watch them become something entirely new.


It's one of the simplest ways to make the number 100 meaningful while introducing students to natural systems they'll remember long after the celebration ends.


Activity: 100 Scraps to Soil

In this activity, students work together to collect 100 compostable items before adding them to a classroom worm bin or compost system. These items might include:

  • Apple cores

  • Banana peels

  • Strawberry tops

  • Lettuce leaves

  • Eggshells

  • Coffee grounds

  • Tea leaves

  • Fallen leaves

  • Small pieces of uncoated paper

  • Wilted flowers


As each item is counted, students build toward the class goal of 100. Every single scrap represents one piece of food or plant material that was diverted from the trash and given a second life. Once the class reaches 100, students place the materials into their compost or worm bin and begin observing what happens over the coming days and weeks.


Why This Activity Works

Many 100th day activities help students practice counting. This activity helps students understand systems. Students physically see what 100 pieces of organic material look like. Then they watch those same materials slowly disappear as decomposers do the work. Over time they discover that food doesn't simply "go away." It changes form.

Instead of becoming landfill waste, those 100 scraps become nutrient-rich compost that helps grow healthier plants. That transformation creates a powerful connection between mathematics, biology, and environmental science.


Observation Journal

The learning doesn't end after Day 100. Students become scientists, recording observations throughout the decomposition process. Ask students to observe:


  • Which foods disappear first?

  • Which materials take the longest?

  • How does the color change?

  • Does the pile shrink?

  • How does the texture change?

  • What does the compost smell like over time?

  • What organisms can you observe?

  • Why are different organisms important?

Older students can measure temperature, estimate volume reduction, graph decomposition rates, and compare different food types. These observations naturally reinforce the scientific method through prediction, observation, data collection, and analysis.


Different Activities for Different Grade Levels

Preschool–Grade 2

Focus on counting and sensory observation. Students can:

  • Count 100 compostable items together

  • Practice sorting food and non-food materials

  • Draw what the compost looks like each week

  • Describe changes using words like wet, dry, soft, rough, dark, and crumbly

  • Read compost-themed children's books alongside the activity


Grades 3–5

Add math and scientific investigation. Students can:

  • Weigh the 100 scraps before composting

  • Estimate how much volume disappears over time

  • Compare which foods decompose fastest

  • Create observation journals

  • Graph weekly changes


Middle & High School

Challenge students with deeper scientific analysis. Students might:

  • Calculate classroom food waste generation over an entire school year

  • Estimate landfill diversion

  • Investigate decomposer biology

  • Study nutrient cycling

  • Explore methane production in landfills versus aerobic composting

  • Design experiments comparing different compost materials


Worm Bin Extension: 100 Worm Workers

Using a vermicomposting system adds another layer of learning. Instead of focusing only on food scraps, students investigate the organisms responsible for decomposition. Students can:

  • Observe approximately 100 composting worms

  • Learn about worm anatomy and behavior

  • Watch worms process food waste over time

  • Compare food preferences

  • Track castings production

  • Observe how worms contribute to healthy soil

  • One plant watered with compost-enriched soil

  • One environmental fact learned


As the wall fills with 100 contributions, students gain a visual reminder that meaningful change happens through consistent, everyday actions.


Questions to Spark Classroom Discussion

Use open-ended questions to deepen student thinking. Ask students:

  • Where does food go after we throw it away?

  • Why do some materials break down faster than others?

  • Why are worms and microbes important?

  • What would happen if food waste always went to the landfill?

  • How does compost help gardens grow?

  • What other natural systems recycle materials?

The Real-World Connection

Food waste doesn't simply disappear when it's thrown away. Students learn that organic materials have two possible paths. One path sends food waste to landfills, where it breaks down without enough oxygen and generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. The other returns those same nutrients to the soil through composting, where they help grow healthier plants, improve soil structure, support beneficial organisms, conserve water, and create healthier ecosystems. That understanding helps students recognize that everyday choices have lasting environmental impacts.
